Is Black Ops 3 Next-Gen Only? Will it Be On Xbox 360 & PS3?

is black ops 3 coming to xbox 360 and ps3

Is Black Ops 3 next-gen only? Many of you will be wondering whether Black Ops 3 is coming to thecall of duty black ops 3 Xbox 360 and PS3, as a lot of people still not have upgraded to next-gen consoles, but would still love to play the latest Call of Duty.

On the other hand, I also know that a good load of you will be praying that Black Ops 3 won’t be hitting last-gen consoles, because you have reason to believe that this will only hold back the game on next-gen consoles. So which is it?

Black Ops 3 WILL be Coming to the Xbox 360 and PS3

Whether this causes you to breathe a sigh of relief or gaze in despair, it’s happening. However, just like Advanced Warfare, Black Ops 3 is being developed by a separate company, but this time, the the developing company is Beenox, who are most well known for developing the Spider Man games.

Also, just to note for those of you that are wondering, Black Ops 3 will not be coming to Wii U, despite the recent rumors.

However, I’m sure what many of you want to know is how Black Ops 3 will compare on next-gen and last-gen consoles, so here it is!

Will Black Ops 3 be the Same on Last-Gen Consoles?

We saw with Advanced Warfare how it compared on last-gen and next-gen consoles with different is black ops 3 coming to xbox 360 and ps3developers; it just didn’t feel quite the same on Xbox 360 and PS3. Don’t get me wrong, the game was nearly the same on next-gen and last-gen, but the graphics were significantly different and a lot of the cool features such as royalty weapons and Ground War just couldn’t run on the likes of the Xbox 360 and PS3.

You may be thinking that this is barely a difference and is bearable, which to a certain extent I agree with; however, the difference is going to be even bigger with Black Ops 3.

Treyarch are having nothing to do with last-gen consoles, so any cool features that they add in after the game comes out, are unlikely to come out on the Xbox 360 and PS3 version of the game.

Also, Treyarch revealed that you can play with up to 3 other people on the campaign on Black Ops 3 on next-gen, however, you will only be able to play with one other person on last-gen, which is quite a big set-back.

Activision have also said that there will be limited functionality on last-gen consoles, of which the specific details have not been revealed, but this is a pretty big hint that the game isn’t quite going to be the same on the Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

Will The Quality of Black Ops 3 be Affected by it’s Release on Last-Gen Consoles?

This is probably the biggest reason lots of you didn’t want Black Ops 3 to be released on last-gen consoles, as you had every reason to suspect that this would just hold Black Ops 3 back on next-gen consoles. So did I!

However, because Treyarch (the development team that are working on Black Ops 3 on next-gen) said they were having nothing to do with the development of Black Ops 3 on PS3 and Xbox 360 and are solely focusing on developing it for Xbox One and PS4, this means that the development of Black Ops 3 on next-gen will not be affected!

In fact, David Vonderhaar, one of the main men at Treyarch, replied to a Tweet confirming that Treyarch are solely working on next-gen consoles.

Is Black Ops 3 Worth Getting for the Xbox 360 and PS3?

Many of you that only have an Xbox 360 and PS3 will now have heard the news that you wanted to here, so it’s likely that you’re just going to hop of my website and have a think about when you’re going to get Black Ops 3 (if you want to get it of course).

However, my question is:

“Is it really worth it?”

Let’s analyse some of the reasons and motives for why you should and shouldn’t get Black Ops 3 for last-gen consoles.

Reasons for getting Black Ops 3 on old-gen consoles:

  • If you can’t afford an Xbox One or PS4.
  • You dislike next-gen consoles.

Reasons for NOT getting Black Ops 3 on old-gen consoles:

  • Few games are being released on the PS3 and PS4 now – The Call of Duty after Black Ops 3 definitely won’t be coming to old-gen consoles and by then I doubt any new games will be.
  • Black Ops 3 on old-gen consoles isn’t going to have as many features as it will on next-gen consoles, as it is being developed by a separate team.

If you are yet to get a next-gen console, and you want to continue playing the latest games, then I would highly suggest buying one. If you can’t afford one, save up.  Otherwise, you’re simply going to be left behind in the gaming world.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not the end of the world if you just can’t afford one yet! Buying Black Ops 3 on a last-gen console would still be a decent option in the meantime, until you can afford one.

Should You Get an Next-Gen Console?

If you want to continue playing new games, you’ll have to. I really urge you to get one if you haven’t already, because the difference will stun you. Truly.

Personally, I’m an Xbox fanboy, so I’d go for that personally, but it’s really up to you. They’re both great consoles!

However, if you have an Xbox 360, it would be more beneficial to get an Xbox One, as Microsoft have just introduced backwards compatibility, allowing you to play your Xbox 360 games on the Xbox One!

You can only do that with 100 games so far, but Microsoft will be doing this with tons of more games in the future. In fact, fans can vote for backwards compatibility on the Xbox forums, and some of the games with the most votes will be made backwards compatible too!

I hope this post helped you out and gave you some good guidance of where about you want to direct your future gaming!

Let me know if you think Black Ops 3 should have been released on last-gen consoles or not!

  1. I honestly tried to go next generation to the xbox one but found that the servers for most games were so rushed I could barely play. I hope the same doesn’t happen for the release of black ops on the 360. I don’t know if you got Halo’s master chief collection but it was worthless trying to get a game in at the release and I have a 100mb connection. 🙁 What are your opinions on the game release rush?

    • Yeah, servers always have always been a problem – But trust me, they’re even worse on last-gen consoles. One thing that virtually the whole of the Call of Duty community has been begging for are ‘dedicated servers’, where the servers aren’t hosted by one of the players in the game. This would make multiplayer much less laggy and a lot more fair, but there is no sign of Activision introducing them yet, as they are pretty expensive and there are many other things that they could invest in and get a greater profit as a result.

      Thanks for your comment Jenni!

  2. Good gaming info on this site–great reviews pictures to keep you engaged in the content. I personally am still undecided on a black background for a site–and think a white color background may convert better–but for your theme and info, it works great and “fits”. May want to take better advantage of the real estate in the sidebar and build it out a little more. Still testing how single column sites convert versus double column sites–would tend to go with the double column for now and it is what I still use.

    • Thanks for your positive comments and constructive criticism, Michael! As a matter of fact, in the next couple of days, I’m going to be completely changing the theme of my website and it’s going to look a TON better. I’m not keen on the grey text on a black background either and only certain themes allow double columns and this is not one that does. However, double columns can make the website look quite packed with information, and I wouldn’t want to columns just packed with ads, as this would just make the user experience worse.

  3. Hello James,
I remember the first gaming system I ever played on, it was an Atari and there was only one game on it Pong, when I got my first Nintendo (NES) I was thrilled with it until super NES came out then the 64 and so on.
I have a 360, I cannot play with the kiddos who spend countless hours perfecting their craft LOL.
I love COD and I have played a lot but I do not think I will be progressing into the the next gen for now.
    Great Article,

    • Wow, it sounds like you are quite the retro gamer! I don’t think I was even around when the Atari came out! I can perfectly understand you not wanting to upgrade to next-gen just now, for the Xbox 360 is just fine if you’re not wanting to get any of the newer games.

Thanks for sharing your gaming experience!

  4. Woah! You wrote a lot for such a small topic. You went over every point you needed to and explained the topic clearly. I personally still own an Xbox 360, so this would be good for me to know. Your content was organized and you stayed on topic. Great job!

    • Thanks for the positive words! I’m not sure if you’re a Call of Duty player yourself, but if you are still wanting to play the latest games, you can do so with Black Ops 3 on the Xbox 360!

  5. I have to be honest I haven’t really noticed much in the difference of graphics between most generation consoles ( yet ). I purchased an xbox one for my son and I about a year back and whilst I’m impressed by the speed of the games…I still expected much more.
As for the next Black Ops game – well they released these new consoles for a reason ( time to upgrade guys! )

    • It does to some extent depend on the game to decipher how the great the difference in graphics between old-gen and next-gen consoles is, depending on the frame rate and other things… However, there are many next-gen original games, which are next-gen original because only the next-gen consoles could display the quality of the graphics etc. Generally, if you put gameplay from the Xbox 360 and Xbox One of Advanced Warfare, for example, next to each other, there is a pretty big difference!

You’re certainly right about it being a good idea to upgrade if wanting to play Black Ops 3, as it really will perform a lot better on next-gen consoles!

      Thanks for your comment!
