Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 specialists are essentially characters that you play as during a multiplayer match; there are a total of 9 specialist characters in Black Ops 3, each of which has their own specialist weapon and ability. These can only be used when the ‘ability gauge’ has been filled up, which re-fills it self roughly every 2-3 minutes, depending on which specialist weapon or ability you are using. Each specialist weapon or ability can only be used for a short amount of time before the ability gauge runs out.
For the specialist character that you decide to play as, you will have to choose between selecting either the specialist weapon or ability. You have to set which specialist character you want to play as before the start of every game, as you cannot change it once a game has started.
You unlock the different specialist characters as you level up and you can unlock their weapons and abilities with ‘unlock tokens’, which you can obtain as you rank up your specialists and just by gaining regular XP.
Let’s take a look at the specialists.
Specialist Character “Ruin”
Unlock level: 1
Specialist weapon: Gravity spikes – smashing them to the ground will kill anybody within a small area of the impact. Effective for clearing out objective flags etc.
Specialist ability: Overdrive – gain a large speed boost. This could be used effectively when trying to flank the enemy, such as in Search and Destroy.
Specialist Character “Outrider”
Unlock level: 1
Specialist weapon: Sparrow – a bow and arrow that fires explosive shots, killing an enemy on impact. Very fun to use and can be used particularly effectively by accurate players.
Specialist ability: Vision Pulse – a ping that highlights enemies in red that are close to you. Useful in nearly all circumstances!
Specialist Character “Prophet”
Unlock level: 1
Specialist weapon: Tempest – a charge-shot energy weapon that kills enemies instantly upon impact, as well as enemies very close by to them. This is one of my favorite specialist weapon on Black Ops 3, as it is very powerful and is useful on any game mode.
Specialist ability: Glitch – allows you to teleport back to the position where you were a few seconds ago. It does take some practice to get good with it, but it can be very helpful for escaping from gunfights and evading the enemy.
Specialist Character “Battery”
Unlock level: 1
Specialist weapon: War Machine – I think most of you will know what this is! The War Machine fires explosive rounds that will detonate after a couple of seconds, or will blow up upon direct impact with an enemy. This is brilliant for clearing out buildings!
Specialist ability: Kinetic Armour – This is one of the more tactical specialist abilities; it makes you immune to bullets on the body for 5 seconds, however you can still take damage to the head or from weapons that don’t fire bullets. This can be used very effectively when capturing a flag etc. as it will provide you some extra protection!
Specialist Character “Seraph”
Unlock level: 22
Specialist weapon: Annihilator – a one shot kill pistol, very similar to the golden gun from Destiny. This is another one of my favorite specialist weapons, as you can absolutely demolish your enemies with it, on whatever game mode you’re playing.
Specialist ability: Combat focus – allows you to get your scorestreaks faster with a score multiplier. This could be particularly useful when you’re trying to go for some of those bigger streaks!
Specialist Character “Nomad”
Unlock level: 28
Specialist weapon: H.I.V.E. – this is one of the most unique specialist weapons on black ops 3. The H.I.V.E. specialist weapon is a launcher that fires white projectiles (A.K.A. pod traps) that stick to the surface they hit. After a couple of seconds, the pod traps release a few nanobots, which stay within a small area from which they were released. These nanobots will stay in their position until you die and will kill any enemies that pass by them! You can fire 5 projectiles per specialist ability. Unlike the other specialist weapons, the H.I.V.E. works best for defensive play, as you can just infest high-traffic areas with the nanobots and the enemies will get destroyed if they try to get through!
Specialist ability: Rejack – after you die, you will have to option to bring yourself back to life and you will instantly get back up on your feet. Following some Black Ops 3 beta changes, rejack was nerfed so that you would lose your killstreaks when using it and the player that killed you before you revived yourself would still get a kill, but many players still don’t think that was enough. If you really have to use rejack, then it can be particularly useful in modes such as CTF, where there are re-spawn delays.
Specialist Character “Reaper”
Unlock level: 34
Specialist weapon: Scythe – Reaper’s arm suddenly transitions into a minigun! This can just mow down lines of enemies and is especially effective at medium distance.
Specialist ability: Psychosis – sends out 3 decoys which look identical to you. This is one of my favorite specialist abilities, because the decoys can create great distractions; the enemies won’t know which one is you!
Specialist Character “Firebreak”
Unlock level: (Not known yet)
Specialist weapon: Purifier – a flamethrower! So many people have been wanting the flamethrower to return in Call of Duty and it finally has. The purifier is particularly effective for clearing out close-quarter areas that are swarmed with enemies, such as in hardpoint.
Specialist ability: Heat wave – stuns everyone within a close radius of activation, as well as disabling enemy equipment. This can be used very effectively on game modes such as hardpoint where everybody is swarming around an area!
