Are Modded Controllers Worth it?

are evil controllers worth it

One of the most controversial topics in gaming is whether modded controllers are worth it or not, as it can be very confusing as to why they tend to be so expensive and what the real benefits of them are. Are they really worth the investment?

Let’s Make Some Things Clear – What Exactly are Modded Controllers?

Before we go any further, it’s important to clarify exactly what modded controllers are; just because you have a modded controller, doesn’t mean that you have aim-bot etc. In fact, a modded controller can be as simple as just being a different color.

A modded controller is simply a controller with any kind of modification/change to the ‘standard controller’ for that specific console. So now I’ve got that clarified, let’s take a look at the different types of mods that you can get!

What are The Main Type of Mods that You Can Get?

The mods that you can get on your controller will only work on certain games, so it largely comes down to what games you play when deciding to get a modded controller. The exception to this is controllers that only have modifications to their appearance; they will work for all games!

Also, it is important to note that you only really get modded controllers for shooter games, such as Call of Duty, Battlefield, Gears of War etc.

So lets take a look at some of the most common controller mods that you can get:

  • Rapid Fire – this is probably the most common controller mod that there is and it works for most of the latest shooter games. It allows you to fire semi-automatic weapons quicker and can prove to be very effective if you utilize it properly!
  • Drop Shot – this mod is very popular for Call of Duty and Battlefield games and it makes you go prone after you fire your weapon (a.k.a. drop-shot). This can be a massive asset in winning gunfights, especially with the likes of a sub-machine gun at close range. Another great thing about it is that you can enable/disable it whenever you want!
  • Fast Reload – this mod is mainly just for Call of Duty and Battlefield also, although there are different variants of it. It increases reload speed anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times faster, depending on the game and weapon. Not bad, eh?

These are just a few of the many controller mods that you can get!

Below is a video of the Evil Controller rapid fire mod, however, unlike it says in the video, it’s now available on both the Xbox 360 and Xbox One, as well as the PS3 and PS4. For more details on the Evil Controller mods, click here.

Are Modded Controllers Cheating?

This is where things start to get controversial, as the word ‘cheating’ can be interpreted in many different ways. If you’re wondering whether modded controllers are legal, then it depends on the retailer. In most cases they are legal, but to be safe, I will give you my personal recommendation slightly later in the post, which is completely legal.

However, some people still argue that using a modded controller is cheating, because you can gain unfair advantages over your opponents. I would agree that some mods are quite unfair, such as fast reload, because it is not possible for other players to do this.

On the other hand, the vast majority of other mods are possible for any player to replicate. For example, the rapid fire mod is essentially a very fast trigger finger and the fundamentals of the drop shot mod can still be done manually with some practice. In the end, it really comes down to your own opinion!

Also, nobody is saying that you have to buy mods such as ‘rapid fire’ and ‘drop shot’! You could simply go for the sensitive triggers and a cool-looking shell and you’ve got yourself a fine modded controller, which is not cheating at all.

I just created this sick controller at Evil Controllers!

I would always recommend Evil Controllers when it comes to modded controllers. They are a trusted and approved company, meaning that their controllers are completely legal to use. You can visit the Evil Controllers knowledge base for more information.

One of the biggest complaints with Evil Controllers in the past has been that their controllers are a bit too expensive; this is something I would probably have agreed with.

However, they currently have a 30% discount on controllers on the ‘Controller Creator’ section, which really does put them at the top of the market in terms of quality for price. Furthermore, you can actually get a further 5% discount if you click on one of the links on my Evil Controllers review!

Overview – Are Modded Controllers Worth it?

So finally, let’s get down to answering the question that you came here looking for; are modded controllers worth it?

First of all, you need to ask yourself some questions:

  • Do you want a modded controller for the looks or the advantageous mods?
  • Will you use it much?

If you just want a modded controller for the cool looks, then you’ve really got to ask yourself if you’re happy to pay around $100 for it; of course you can customize them to be cheaper than this, especially with my 35% discount code, but it is still a lot of money. Personally I wouldn’t ever pay more than $100 for a controller that simply looks different, as you can use your money more wisely, but this question is one only you can decide for yourself.

On the other hand, if you’re considering getting a modded controller for the likes of ‘rapid fire’ and are modded controllers worth the money‘drop shot’, it’s important to bear in mind that the controller will be more expensive. However, when you customize your controller with Evil Controllers, they have a feature you can add called ‘Master Mod’ which is a bundle of pretty much all of their Call of Duty mods as well as some others.

The great thing is, that they have reduced this price from over $200 to under $60 now, so price-wise, mods for controllers have never been cheaper.

The image to the right displays everything that the Master Mod includes; in my opinion, $60 is a pretty good price for all of those mods, even without the discount codes!

If you can deal with the grief you’ll get from other players for using one and if you think they’re fair to use, then they may be a worthy investment if you’re really looking to take gaming a little more seriously.

However, if the reason you want to get a controller is for competitive gaming, such as MLG, then you should check the rules before getting one, because certain mods are banned.

In summary, in some cases they are worth it, in others they are not. It mainly comes down to what you think is right and the amount of money that you are happy to spend!

  1. That was a very informative post, thank you. On the ‘master mods’ picture it says “Black ops 3 Beta”. Does this mean that it will work with the full game and the beta or just the beta?

    • Great question, Jack.

Since Black Ops 3 has not been released yet, the mods have not been tested with the full version of the game. However, I wouldn’t imagine that they would have to update the mods to be compatible on Black Ops 3 if they are already compatible with the beta, as it is the same game, but don’t quote me on that. To be on the safe side, I would recommend waiting until the game actually comes out, or if you’re really desperate to know, you can get in touch with Evil Controllers Contacts, as I am not completely sure myself.

However, for completely new games you will have to get your mods upgraded for them to work, as they need to be upgraded. You can do this by contacting their customer service.

Sorry I couldn’t completely answer your question!

  2. If i buy a modded controller for bo2 will it work on bo1 also?

    • If you’re referring to whether the mods will work on both games, then it depends on the company. However, I know that with Evil Controllers all of the main mods such as rapid fire etc. definitely work on both Black Ops 1 and Black Ops 2. Check out their modded controllers here 🙂
